Chapter Seven

Craig stopped focusing on the enormous burning pain that was in his side. The worst part was that the bullet had struck him right beneath his wing, so every time he flapped it, the most amazing sort of pain practically blinded him to everything else that was around him. He could hardly breathe, could barely think. His only mission was to get to the castle and drop off his mate before he collapsed and they both fell out of the sky.

Craig might survive something like that, but his human mate couldn’t.

In a weird way, he was lucky, however. The Templars had likely been aiming for the bones that connected his wing to the rest of his body. Usually that was how they managed to shoot dragons out of the sky. A dragon who couldn’t fly was pretty helpless, but Craig was chugging along, and Cole was still on his back, still clutching tightly to him while Craig kept them in the air. A trip that would’ve taken hours to make was now going to take them only forty-five minutes or so, maybe less, now that Craig was in the air and could tell where he was going.

Damn, those Templars had taken him far from home. They must’ve gotten the hell out of Dodge after the attack on the clan went south. Craig hadn’t been speaking, but he’d done a lot of listening, and he knew the Templars were getting in trouble with the media and public now. Their image was shot to shit, and that required a lot of lying low and hiding.

Craig kept his mind off of the pain by fantasizing about what he was going to do when he landed back at the clan. He could already see the faces of his friends, happy to see him alive and well, and Craig was going to surprise the hell out of them, and out of Cole, when he lifted the human’s hand into the air and introduced the man as his mate. It was enough to make him grin just thinking about it. The look on Cole’s face would sure as hell be worth it.

But then the pain was getting worse and worse. He was pretty sure that Cole was trying to speak with him, to ask him questions, possibly about when they were finally going to land, but Craig didn’t have anything he could say to the man. He was starting to feel like how Cole had probably felt when he’d been bashed in the head by that prick in the Templar basement. His eyes were becoming heavy, and his stomach was turning with nausea brought on by the pain in his wing.

He tried gliding for a time just so that he wouldn’t have to move the appendage around, but somehow that just made the pain he felt that much worse. He was going to be sick. He was going to throw up just like Cole had. He laughed at the mental image of puking on any Templars who were below him, but then he remembered that he’d flown too far away for that.
